Grandpa and Thomas and the Green Umbrella

Green umbrella drawingTo make green umbrellas, make a master with 2 umbrellas on an A4 sheet. Photocopy on to light green paper. Cut the sheets in half to separate the umbrellas. Place on top of a dark green sheet of paper and staple twice at one end to hold it together when cutting out. Cut off the bottom half of the dark green sheet. You will be left with a light green umbrella stapled to a dark green blank. Make as many as required for the class.

Instructions for children

Start at the bottom of the umbrella and cut along the scalloped edge, removing the bottom part of the paper, but cutting through both the light green and dark green bits at the same time.

Then cut the other bit of scalloped edge so that you have two identical pieces, one light green and one dark green. Put them aside carefully.

Now cut around the curved part of the umbrella. Put one light piece with one dark piece to make a two tone umbrella. Do this with the other two bits. Glue them onto pieces of blue paper.

Umbrella templateBefore the glue dries, use a wooden skewer (with the pointy tip cut off) to make the handle. A bit of sticky tape will help to hold it in place.

Older children can add hatching and cross hatching to create a shadow effect. Use the umbrellas to set up a display in the library. You could create a backdrop of a beach scene with umbrellas flying across the beach.
