This is a reading incentive program managed by the library and designed especially to encourage 'reading fitness' in year 3 students (aged about 7-8) by rewarding 'sustained reading'. (Reading of books requiring multiple sessions to finish, eg. Chapter books etc)
Class chart showing levels of increasing 'reading fitness' maintained by TL:
Walker athlete: 5 books
Jogger athlete: 5 books
Runner athlete: 4 books
Marathon athlete: 4 books
(It is assumed the books are getting longer at the 2 top levels.)
Each student also has individual training logs to record what they are reading. This is filled in after they have finished reading their book. Attempted but unfinished books, abandoned due to difficulty or boredom, are recorded on the back of the training log. Logs are kept in class folders. (The template for the Reading Log is on our Book Week publication 2010.) The Wow! Rating used in the log is the same 1-5 scale as used in the 5W's book report. (A template for 5W's Book Report is in the Book Week publication.)
The final book in each level needs to have a 5W’s book review completed to move to the next level. Recognition bookmarks and athlete energy bars in the form of Freddo Frogs will help each Reading Athlete 'leap' to the next level. Students reaching Marathon athlete status will receive a prize book on parade.
