Ipswich District Teacher-Librarian Network and the Ipswich Library are working together to run Story Sports™ competitions each November with popular author Brian Falkner.
Heats have been held over three days at the Ipswich Library auditorium with the finals competition held on the last day with the winning team taking away a perpetual trophy to hold for the year.
Story Sports™ takes the concept of a writing workshop and turns it into a competitive sport. It's a little like theatre sports, except that the emphasis is on writing skills. Students compete in quick-fire games that test their creativity, imagination, and story-writing skills to win prizes.
Story Sports™ teams have four members from year 6-7 classes. Audience members also participate in some simple and fun games, with prizes, while the teams are working on their answers.
There is no preparation required, but staff members from Ipswich Library have been running training sessions in schools in the lead up to the competition.
The winning team in 2013 was Brassall State School.
