Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat Activity

Exploring Shape

  1. Look at the shapes in the double spread showing Milli's shop when "the townspeople slowed down for a look." Create a list of words to describe the shapes or lines, even be creative by making up new words to fit, like "squiddly-squirly". Write a simple poem containing some/all of the descriptive words.
  2. With paper, create a 3D sculpture to demonstrate the twisting, turning spirals, etc.
  3. Using recycled materials create a sculpture that could become a feature in the school grounds.
  4. With the shapes in mind, create a flowing movement to match. Put the movements together to create a continual flow.
  5. Select music that is flowing, to match the spirals. Put the music and movement together to create a dance that is "wiggly wonderful" or "brave and free."

Media Focus

  1. Design a poster/flyer to publicise Milli's shop, to locals and tourists.
  2. Photography - search around your classroom/school for things that represent either the straight, brown, black and ordinary, or the twisty-swirly shapes. Take photos of these. [You may need to take photos of only a part of a shape.] Display these photos.
  3. Storyboarding - Using the sequence of the story, create a storyboard to show the influence Tom and the Dancing Cat had on Milli.
