And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Words by Eric Bogle. Illustrations by Bruce Whatley.

Listen to the song and discuss - You Tube

Imagine you are an ANZAC. Create a diorama using a shoe box, play dough or plasticine for the soldiers, sand, bits of cloth, tissue paper and other materials to depict the trenches the soldiers lived in at the Gallipoli peninsula on 25 April 1915.

Discussion Starters:

  • How do the illustrations and use of colour and line create different moods throughout the story?
  • Do the illustrations match the lyrics of Eric Bogle’s song?
  • What extra information do the illustrations portray?
  • Is a timeline of the Gallipoli campaign shown by the illustrations?
  • Discuss what it must have been like living in the trenches from day to day, keeping an eye out for Johnny Turk and looking after your mates.

Debate:

Students debate the pros and cons of the lines: “But as year follows year, more old men disappear,

Someday no one will march there at all”.

Students research the author and poem   “Waltzing Matilda”. What did the author do in WW1?

Students research the establishment of Legacy and Veteran’s pensions.

On a world map students find Gallipoli, Sulva Bay and in Australia: The Murray River and Circular Quay Sydney.
